Six Feet Away: A Sidewalk Portrait Series

I’ll be photographing my neighbors as they, and I, navigate our way through social distancing and staying connected during the early days of quarantine. I asked the question “How are you staying connected?”

Married 5 years “As a couple we’re always connected because we’re always talking. Not light chatter, but deep water conversation, personal and revealing. More broadly, technology is key. Calls, texting are easy and critical for touching base with family and friends. Last but not least is timely and reliable reporting. Reporters and journalists so important. NPR is awesome!”

Married since 1994 “Disconnecting outside of home has cleared the way for getting connected to a new family and home situation. We have been together for more than 25 years but in this house for less than a full year. Working, moving and keeping up with family commitments has left little time in the past year and a half for home time. We are looking at the situation as an opportunity, not an obstacle.”

Robert has lived in the neighborhood for at least 20 years and when I asked him how he was staying connected he only had one thing to say, “Praying.”

Kelcy + Genevieve
Married 7 years
April 2, 2020 | Pigtown

Kelcy and I are staying connected in a lot of ways. Kelcy is working from home and is regularly on calls and attending phone conferences for his job. He is deeply connected to work and his colleagues. Any new connections come as a result of our dog. He requires lots of activity which means we are outside walking or hiking with him a few times a day. We end up meeting people on those walks and hikes while observing the 6 ft distance. It's encouraging to see others who are dealing with isolation in similar ways and to check in with strangers we may not have otherwise met. When it comes to more personal relationships, we've been using online video platforms to connect with friends and family like zoom meals or an evening shared drink and FaceTime chat.
