A last minute assignment came up tonight at work that took me to a local carnival. The last time I went to a carnival for work I talked my way on to quite a few kids rides to take photos. And of course I did it again tonight and rode the bumper cars with a lovely little girl named Madison. She was an excellent bumper car driver, we were the only ones on the ride so it made for a smooth picture taking adventure. While I was wondering around I spotted a neat reflection and started to see if I could make something cool out of it. Here’s a look.
A while ago I got the chance to photograph Effervescent Collective, a local dance company that was started by Lily Susskind, a Lindy Hop friend. I went to a dress rehearsal for their latest get together- Dance Round Robin, where a bunch of local experimental dance performances went down. There is so much to say about Effervescent Collective that I, in no way, can do it justice here so go check out their website http://effervescentcollective.org/
Because they are a nonprofit organazation you can donate here -> https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/3033
You all need to donate to this totally awesome dance company!! And the next time they perform go check them out.
Here is one of the photos from Shake Off Choreographed by Lily and performed by Effervescent Collective
Who doesn’t love vintage pin-up posters from way back when? I know I do and I’m assuming you do too. I got the chance to take a few pin-up photos a few weeks back with Sommer for an upcoming event at Charm City Swing! Guys and Girls Gone Wild… a solo jazz extravaganza!! Jazz details, blues, girls choreography, secrets of the Killer Dillers and burlesque, my head is spinning just thinking about it. I don’t know about the rest of you but I am super excited to attend this event. On Friday March 18th there will be a vintage bathing suit badminton contest at the Baltimore Strut (everyone should come) so I thought it would be fun to take a few photos of a pin-up girl with a badminton. If anyone wants to sign up go here http://www.guysandgirlsgonewild.com/ Sommer said she would gladly be my model and so we set up a date and had some fun shooting these awesome pictures! Here is one of my favorites from the shoot and if you look on facebook you can see the Vintage Bathing Suit Badminton Contest poster as well.
Most of you that live in or around Baltimore saw the awesomeness of last night’s snow storm. I personally have never seen lightening and heard thunder during a snow storm before so to me it was pretty cool. I ended up not going into work yesterday because of the snow and when Wednesday night’s storm began it didn’t take long before our power was out. I had a few offers to stay with other people but decided to tough it out and wait for the power to come back on, thinking it would at any minute. It just so happened that the power stayed out all night and into the morning, 7pm -7am. I stayed warm under multiple layers and had a fully charged laptop so I watched Arrested Development. This morning the roads were being cleared and in no time my road was safe to drive. So I got ready and made my way into work. I ended up driving down a street I drive down a lot and saw this beautiful yard with snow covering all the trees. So I parked at a church parking lot down the street and made my way back to the yard to snap a few pictures. Check it out.
My roommate Beth got engaged last year and asked if I would take her engagement photos. Of course I said yes and we started to think about where she and Shawn would like to go. Both are into sports and out doorsy type things so the park seemed to be the perfect place to go. For the first go round we ended up at Savage Mill in duh… Savage, Maryland. I had been there before on other photo shoots and remember that there was a ton of places to take pictures there. It was August if my memory serves me, it was god awful hot so it could have been anytime in the summer around here! We got a lot of great shots there and we happened to be there at the same time as a wedding, they were also using the lovely steel bridge as place to take their photos as well. The second time we went out to take photos was in October or November when the leaves were changing. I think we missed the leaves changing by about a week because everything was already brown by then, but the photos still turned out very nice. I can’t decide which ones are my favorite so here are a couple from the engagement session… you decide!
Today I went on an assignment for Harford Magazine to a place of pure joy and delight… Sweet Devotions, a cupcake and creperie cafe. I know right! This new business in Havre de Grace, MD makes home made cupcakes everyday in a variety of flavors, including banana, carrot cake, vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet. I am sure there are more but I just can’t remember them. I plan on going back with all my friends who went to France with me to indulge in a crepe or two and maybe if we have room left, a peanut butter cup cupcake for me. If anyone would like to join us for this sure to be awesome trip, feel free to let me know! So back to the photos… it was hard to take a bad picture of these delicious looking masterpieces. I took a few with a group and some individual ones as well. Since these photos will be in a magazine, I thought ahead and tried to compose a shot that might be used for the cover. Here’s a peek at my possible cover shot, remember there is room for text.
Some of you may know that I have been working on some designs to get into grad school lately. Well I had my interview today and was accepted into the University of Baltimore’s Publication Design program. Woohoo! So here is one of the designs, Lindy Junkie, and a close-up, I showed during the interview.
About a month ago, I got the chance to go to Paris for 10 days. I posted my one and only Paris picture right after I got back of the Eiffel Tower and promised that I would put more photos up soon. Well… soon turned out to take a little longer then expected, but I finally have a few to show you. I have so many other photos but unfortunately they would never fit on this blog so the ones that made the final cut are mostly of the awesome places that we visited throughout our trip. The first day of exploring took us to Chateau de Versailles. Its most famous resident being Louis XIV. The chateau is enormous and has gold leaf everywhere. I managed to get lost from the group in one of the rooms, finished the tour by myself and waited ever so patiently for them to find me at the bottom of the stairs. Day 2- Normandy! Of course where we were staying in France, Boissy sous Saint Yon, was no where near Normandy, so after a 3 hour car ride we arrived at Omaha Beach. It was the biggest beach I have ever seen and the cliffs that ran along the sides were absolutely beautiful. It is hard to imagine something so horrible happening there only 66 years ago. The American cemetery is also in Normandy and over looks Omaha Beach. We strolled around the cemetery and saw all the sights before heading back for dinner. Of course I need to talk about the bakeries, otherwise known as the Boulangerie. Everyday we ended up getting a new loaf of bread or a baguette and we tried a pastry or two. But the one thing I miss the most is the bread, it was divine! I can’t wait until I find a good bakery around here so I can re-live those days in Paris if only for a few minutes. Moving on! Day 3 & 4 were spent traveling around Paris and seeing as much as we possibly could. We saw The Louvre, where we saw the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Winged Victory of Samothrace (and so many more that I can’t fit them all here), Notre Dame (unfortunatley we missed the hunchback), walked along the Champs Elysees and had crepes with Nutella, the Arc de Triomphe and last but not least the Eiffel Tower. I hope you all enjoyed the quick trip to France and are now planning your next vacation!
A few weeks ago I was invited by my friend Mike to France for a vacation/wedding. Mike’s brother Dan was getting married. We (Mike’s family, a few friends from the states and myself) had a whole week to take in the sights before Dan and Elsa’s wedding at the end of the week. I know I still have to put up some photos from my trip but here are a few from the wedding.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and I know that everyone is dying for their Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits, pumpkin pie and all your other favorites are patiently waiting to be devoured. I know I will be running around in the morning working then heading to my family to dive into some mashed potatoes! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend and enjoy my Turkey Day photos of someone not so patiently waiting for their meal.
